This is a brief that gave me the freedom to recreate any cinematic movie title; but it had to be handmade.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Suskind. For context, please visit this link to view the Perfume movie trailer.
My interpretation of the brief needed to document how The Nose saw the world through his sense of smell. He was on a dark quest to acquire the ingredients to create the perfect scent at any cost.
For my process, I foraged around the neighborhood and into the woods, as well as visited a local florist and my kitchen pantry. I assembled plant-life like moss, berries and bark; as well as exotic flowers, coffee and spices. I then laid out the pieces in a font-type, using the brightest specimens at the top, and fading to the dying, lifeless pieces at the bottom - to mimic the sinister plot of the movie.
Russia’s capital city grew, expanding its borders since 2012. I wanted to acknowledge this in a public way, showcasing for Russia’s new residents the city’s expansion and growth.
Why green? Muscovites are surrounded by greenery every day: a large percentage of the city’s area is wedges of parklands and forestry, constantly growing in an organic cycle.
"Bueller... Bueller..."
First crushes, cutting class and childish imagination: John Hughes movies were 80’s pop cinema documenting our searching and found moments. The British Film Institute (BFI) hosted a series of evenings showing some of John Hughes’ first film reels. Everyone has a personal memory sparked by one of his films; this is why I designed the poster in the form of a note that we were passed long before we just hit send.
This annual report was created for the neighborhood of Harlem in New York City. The bold color palette found on the pages and in the graphics was chosen to match the vibrancy, resilience and strong character of the neighborhood's diverse residents. From the area's lively bodegas, to its stoop culture, to the corrugated rooftops of its signature buildings; the annual report needed to capture both facts and spirit. The annual report's gravitas and dignity is in line with what Harlem deserves.
Open Skies is a coffee roaster and café perched in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Its identity is a reminder to the traveler who gets lost in the memory of looking out over a vista as far as the eye can see – into open skies. The type is left to be free and airy, in order to evoke simply sitting on your front porch, gazing into the distance with only singing birds to keep you in the moment.
Roads & Kingdoms is an independent journal of food, politics, travel and culture. In conjunction with documentary photographer and journalist, Michael Magers, R&K was hosting an exhibition in Havana to showcase photographs of Cuban musicians performing in a recent emotional debut at SxSW.
I was asked to create a digital invitation as well as a show-card for the event. Michael Magers provided the inspiration with his beautiful and raw photographs, and I designed the pieces to reflect the importance and excitement of the exhibition.
Please visit Roads & Kingdoms and Michael Magers to learn more about my partners on this assignment.
